Order your 2018 Microphone Calendar!

2018-cal-collage1The 2018 Vintage Bullet Microphone Calendar is now ready for pre-orders…that’s right! Last year was the first year I started doing one of my dream projects: a microphone calendar, and even though I put it together at the last minute, they did sell out. So this year I spent a little more time designing it…now it is printed on heavier stock, and also including the birthdays of some of my favorite harmonica players who inspired me! Designed by myself and photographed by Dave Gross, not only is it the only calendar of it’s kind, but the photos really are beautiful. If you love vintage gear, play harmonica, or know someone who falls into either of those categories, this is for you…just “Add To Cart” below to pre-order now!!

Alligator Records signs The Nick Moss Band feat. Dennis Gruenling!

16904618_10154855336525801_6598095034762380784_o(from the press release…) Alligator Records is pleased to announce the signing of famed Chicago-based blues guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter Nick Moss. The Nick Moss Band Featuring Dennis Gruenling will release their label debut The High Cost Of Low Living in March 2018.

Nick Moss is a bona fide bluesman to his soul with 12 solo releases to his credit, ranging from straight ahead Chicago blues to experimental blues-rock. The new album is a return to the classic Chicago blues ensemble sound Moss knows, lives and loves. But it’s no re-creation of old songs. Moss wrote nine memorable new originals and Gruenling wrote two, all rooted in the blues tradition.

Moss is a 30-year veteran guitarist who paid his dues gigging in Chicago’s rough and tumble West and South side blues clubs under the tutelage of some of the city’s greatest blues luminaries. He learned directly from, and toured with, blues giants Jimmy “Fast Fingers” Dawkins, Willie “Big Eyes” Smith and Jimmy Rogers.
New Jersey’s Dennis Gruenling is considered among the very top blues harmonica players today. As a teen,Gruenling heard the Alligator recording Harp Attack! (featuring Junior Wells, Carey Bell, James Cotton and Billy Branch) and decided the harmonica was his calling. A self-taught player, his fat-toned harp work, soulful singing and raw-boned, untamed energy are a perfect foil for Moss’ hair-raising guitar playing and commanding vocals. Blues Revue called Gruenling “a leading light among a new generation of harp players…a true innovator.”
According to Alligator president Bruce Iglauer, Nick is a natural fit for the label. “It’s very exciting to bring an artist to Alligator who is so deeply rooted in the Chicago blues tradition, but creating fresh new songs to carry that tradition forward. He’s a thrilling guitar player, a gritty, honest singer, and his band is tough as nails. Dennis Gruenling is a blues harmonica master and a terrific showman, and he brings another world class talent to Nick’s band. These are artists that any fan of the blues has got to love.”

Ready Or Not cd

“Ready Or Not” is out with the VizzTone label group!

My new all-original CD is out with  the VizzTone label group (available on this site, CD Baby, Amazon and everywhere else)…and this time not only is at all originals rooted in the 1950’s Rhythm & Blues/early Rock & Roll vein, but I’m also handling all the vocals – SAY WHAT?!?  That’s right, you heard me (or at least, you will now, lol!)  While working on these tracks, aside from hearing from countless friends and fans tell me that I should sing for the past couple decades, I was making the demos and working out the tunes and gave it a go…and I just stuck with it. If you dig what I’ve been doing for the past number of years with Doug Deming (who is of course on this disc) and my Jump Time records, you will likely dig this mix of 50’s styled blues & roots music…with influences ranging from 1950’s rock & roll and rhythm & blues artists such as John Lee Hooker, Fats Domino, Louis Jordan, Chuck Berry and more. I’ll be updating the site with some reviews that are coming in…check’em out & grab the disc when you can!!

JAZZ-BLUES.COM “Harmonica wizard Dennis Gruenling has a new release on VizzTone, “Ready Or Not”…another highly enjoyable recording”

NOW DIG THIS “…the material, musicianship and delivery is so good that this is an irresistible experience…and find it far more rockin’ than many of the bands I see passed off as rockin’ bands on the current rock n roll scene.”

REFLECTIONS IN BLUE “Not only does he play some of the finest harmonica I have heard since the days of the old masters, he has written all of the recording’s 13 tunes and, he steps up to the microphone and shows himself as a top-notch vocalist…Be prepared to become a lifelong fan”

IL POPOLO DEL BLUES “…a variety that is exemplary manifesto of great technical ability of Gruenling and its melodic and inventive style…” (translated)

BMAN’S BLUES REPORT “…it’s a barn burner…Little Sugar is a pure rock n’ roller…sizzling blues/jazz number Think Twice is smoking hot with Gruenling riffing out on harp followed by vocal lead…”

MAKING A SCENE  “This is R’n’B, rock n’ roll, and jump blues at its finest. On the opener “Knockin’ My Knees” Gruenling sings several verses before even pickin’ up a harp and his vocal is right on the money.”

BLUES MAGAZINE “Dennis is initially known for its fabulous harmonica technique, but in the meantime he is also nice with his singing skills…a topper on all fronts, no wonder he wins prizes regularly and has secured the necessary awards”

ELMORE MAGAZINE ““Simmer Down” perhaps encapsulates in four minutes why Gruenling is often hailed by his peers as one  of the world’s best harmonica players.  Now we know, he has even more skills.”

DON & SHERYLS BLUES BLOG “Dennis Gruenling continues to up the ante on why he is one of the most dynamic harp players on today’s scene.  “Ready Or Not” is just begging you to give it a listen and put on your dancin’ shoes!!”

MIDWEST RECORD REVIEW  “Gruenling takes his harp back to the early days of rock, blows the roof off the sucker and lets the high octane flow…Hot stuff that brings the heat and keeps delivering it well after the temperature has been fully raised”

What an unbelievable honor to be featured on the box of Hohner’s top-of-the-line Marine Band style harmonica – the Crossover model!! I have played Hohner harmonicas from day one, and have been been a long-time endorser. Several years ago, I was asked to be a more official endorser, and helped with the development of the Thunderbird model and some other testing. Honored beyond words to be featured on the Hohner Crossover box and as always, I only play Hohner Marine Band style harmonicas…many times these Crossover models right out of the box!

Dennis Gruenling named “Best Harp Player”!!!

Best_Harp_PlayerBlues has given out there “Jimi” Awards for 2013, and the list of harmonica players in the running for “Best Harp Player” featured some of my favorite players (including Kim Wilson). I got a personal call from Chef Jimi to inform me of the decision to award the honor to me! I am thrilled, honored, and humbled, as the other players in the running were all top-notch talent. Thank You Jim and!
